The Night Before

So tomorrow night about this time, we'll be getting everyone situated on stage for our first night of "Joseph Smith the Prophet" at the Tabernacle. I'm pretty excited. Though the week didn't start that way.

First of all, one thing I've learned over the years is that, starting about 10 days before any given performance, you begin getting cancellations from your performers. Some have legit emergencies that come up, others mistakenly double-booked, but most just don't have any sense of commitment or what they put you through when they cancel so late in the game. So, as usual, I had about 6-7% of the group cancel on me in the last couple weeks leading up to now. And with a group over 300 in number, that's a lot of people. The really unfortunate thing is that they always tend to congregate in one section of the orchestra or choir. This time it was tenors and violins. So I emailed about 8 more violins, all of which could not do it.

MORAL: Don't cancel on people. Period. Once you make a commitment, keep it. If you absolutely HAVE TO break it, find a replacement solution before you contact them. Let them decide whether they'll take it or not. It's the considerate, honest and professional thing to do.

Then last Saturday I woke up with the worst flu of my life. Now granted, I don't get sick often, so some of you may have scoffed at my pain, but I was out for the count. I couldn't spend more than a half hour or so at a time out of bed it seemed. By Monday, I was still really sick and my flight left that night. I tried to reschedule, but they wanted $1 million to switch, so I decided to infect their entire crew and every passenger with my disease. I started to wonder whether I should get a replacement conductor, just in case. It was that bad.

But Tuesday morning came and, I believe miraculously, I was at just about 100%. Just in time for our only choir rehearsal in the Tabernacle. The rehearsal went flawlessly. Everyone was ready to go, totally prepared, we had an awesome accompanist and an extremely kind and helpful Tabernacle staff, I got to wear what I call a "Madonna" mic (Britney wears one too, but she's insane and so does Garth, but he's country), so that was pretty cool.

What's wonderful about such a great rehearsal, is it totally puts me at ease until the performance. Which is tomorrow. And if it goes anything like our rehearsal on Tuesday, it just well could be the most spectacular performance I've ever been involved with yet. Maybe I'll let you know.

Hey I was looking for news updates on the performance at the Tabernacle and discovered you have a blog--go figure. I heard the performances went really well! Congratulations! And how exciting to have Pres. Monson and Uchtdorf there Friday.

By the way, don't worry about not updating your blog all that often. We tend to favor the sprint/walk method over the steady-paced approach too. Besides, if you get really far behind, you can just change the dates of your entries and it looks like your on the ball (speaking from experience). Although... I must say for a web-developing guru your layout's pretty basic. Come on now. Where's the frill?

Rob,

I think it's awesome that you have a blog! Thank you for allowing me to be a part of that amazing performance. I was sorry to hear about people canceling on you...those who did really missed out. My friends and family who attended were all so impressed by your talents. We all think you should start writing music for movies. You'd be amazing at that. Is that something you would ever do?

Anyway, thanks again for helping strengthen my testimony through your wonderful music!

I don't know how else to contact you, so I was happy to stumble across this blog! I don't know where you got our daughter Janae's name for the choir -- she just got an email from you out of the blue last fall inviting her to participate. She checked out your music and was so impressed, and commited to do the performance at Abravanel. It was a wonderful experience for her. My husband and I came from Houston to see the Tabernacle performance on Sat. night with some friends. It was wonderful! We're so happy to have the DVD to share with our friends here. You are a gifted musician, and we wish you the best.

Please can you email me about a book project I'm currently involved in, which Deseret Book have asked to see. I'd like to include you and your work in the book, if you'd like to a part of it.

Others already on board include the Osmonds, Kieth Merrill, Jason Wright, Paul Skousen, Guy Hedderwick, Lu Ann Staheli, Donna Dewberry, and more.

I can send further information upon request. Hope this reaches you.

Hi Rob,
I was actually searching for Primary Program stuff, stumbled across Sharon Hopkins' site, which had a link to you on Spire Music - and then I googled you and found your blog.

I was one of the violinists with the orchestra in 2001 - performances & recording of Joseph Smith the Prophet. Those were such spiritual experiences - each performance - and the music such a testimony builder! It holds a really special place in my soul.

You do great work! Since those days at BYU (I remember you lived the complex over from me), I've had a family, moved all around, but I run across your music all the time in the different wards I've been in all over the country. I know you've said you're a semi-annual blogger, but I hope you get this comment, and please continue all the wonderful things that you do. I hope one day to be able to play your music again with you.

Thanks,
Grace Liu Anderson

You don't know me but I LOVE your work... I love the spirit your music brings in our home. My inlaws arent LDS and I have been trying to find out if you were going to be doing "He is Jesus Christ" in Arizona any time soon? Or how I find your schedule of when and where you are doing what, I would LOVE to take my inlaws. If you have time could you let me know how I could keep up with all of that? Thanks, Amy

Remember me? Janette Tomlinson from the mission? I heard your song during the CES broadcast in September and had no idea you had written this. I was so absolutely moved I had to have the music and lo and behold, it's Rob! You're an incredible composer and musician! Thanks -

Rob,
You probably don't remember me. I think I was John the Baptist in a Provo Tabernacle He is Jesus Christ in the late 90's.
Anyway, I've been living in NYC for the past 5 yrs., working as a teacher, singer, actor, conductor, etc...and anything else to keep my family alive in this crazy city.
Anyway, I am the Stake Music Chairman of the Manhattan Stake. I'm interested in talking to you about a possible collaboration with one of your oratorios and our VERY talented members in the stake.
If you're interested in this, email me at matthew@matthewherrick.net

Thanks. I hope all is well

Rob, its been more than a year since our performance of "Joseph Smith the Prophet" at the tabernacle in SLC. Jean and I have been released as Stake Cultural Arts Directors and after producing two of your works in our Stake and then being able to sing with you in the Tabernacle, there is certainly a void. Thanks for sharing your gift with us and when can we sing again?
